5G vs COVID-19 Conspiracy Theory

There have been a lot of rumours concerning 5G aiding the spread of the corona virus, there a million conspiracy theories concerning this 5G as people around the globe cant help but to share their opinions on social media. Many phone shave rolled out with the 5G capacity like the Samsung S10 5G, Huawei Mate 20 X 5G, Nokia 8.3 5G, LG V50 Thin, Oppo Reno 5G, OnePlus 7 Pro 5G and so many more. We are going to look into the relationship of 5G and COVID-19 shortly but before we do, let's take a close look on 5G with an open mind before comparing and deducing the relationship it has with corona virus.

About 5G

5G is also known as the fifth generation of wireless communication technologies that also supports cellular data network, and it is divided into three frequency spectrum waves.

  • Millimeter waves: This is the fastest waves out of the three, the frequencies are above  24 GHz reaching up to 72 GHz, which is above the extremely high frequency band's lower boundary and because the reach is short, it requires many cell towers. Millimeter waves have difficulties passing through many walls and windows thus indoor coverage is limited.
  • Mid-Band: The frequency is deployed between the ranges of 2.5 GHz to 4.2 GHz, used by Sprint and China Mobile, it is one of the cheapest to deploy as existing 4G cell towers can be upgraded. They have a better reach
  • Low-Band: This offers almost the same as 4G, it cannot be more significantly greater than robust 4G in the same spectrum and it is mostly used in the US by T-mobile and AT&T.
Scientists says the most important criterion about whether any particular Radio Frequency Radiation is dangerous is if it falls into the non-ionizing or ionizing radiation which means that if you put any radiation that’s non-ionizing, it is too weak to break chemical bonds. These includes ultraviolet, visible light, infrared, and everything with a lower frequency, like radio waves. Everyday technologies like power lines, FM radio, and Wi-Fi also fall into this range. (Microwaves are the lone exception: non-ionizing but able to damage tissue, they’re precisely and intentionally tuned to resonate with water molecules.) Frequencies above UV, like x-rays and gamma rays, are ionizing.

The concerned issue about the 5G is the low power transmitter hence leading to need to install many transmitter from the rage of every two to ten homes  according to estimates, this is a reasonable question to ask. It is easy to question the big risk of 5G because other wireless communication technologies 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G uses between 1 GHz to 6 GHz frequency, while 5G uses between 24 GHz to 90 Ghz how worrisome it can  be.
Using the theory the more frequency the higher the risk is no surprise, but 5G still remains part of the non-ionizing frequency.

FCC is responsible for making regulations and licensing the spectrum for public use, Neil Derek Grace, a communications officer at the FCC, “For 5G equipment, the signals from commercial wireless transmitters are typically far below the RF exposure limits at any location that is accessible to the public.” The FCC defers to the FDA for actual health risk assessments, which takes a direct, but low-key approach to addressing the risks: “The weight of scientific evidence has not linked cell phones with any health problems.”

Also In 2011, the World Health Organization weighed in, classifying RF Radiation as a Group 2B agent, which is defined as “Possibly carcinogenic to humans.” This, too, is nuanced. According to  Novella, “you have to look at all the other things they classify as a possible carcinogen. They put it in the same class as things like caffeine. That is such a weak standard that it basically means nothing. It’s like saying ‘everything causes cancer." The Scientific consensus is that 5G is safe, everything we know about 5G networks tells us that there’s no reason to be alarmed. After all, there are many technologies we use every day with a substantially higher measurable risk. And as Dr. Novella says, “With 5G the hazard is low but non-zero and the actual risk appears to be zero. We’ve picked up no signal in the real world.”

The disinformation in the media and online in the regard of 5G technology posing potential health effects linking to cause corona virus, brain cancer, infertility, autism, heart tumors and Alzheimer's disease lack scientific support. There is no known relationship between 5G and COVID-19 as there is no proof concerning 5G giving the the symptoms of the corona virus.
